Choosing the boat that is right for you
What type of boat is best for my lifestyle?
Maybe you are an avid fisherman who spends endless summer days searching for that fish that will give you ultimate bragging rights, or want to spend summer afternoons slowly cruising with a group of friends on your pontoon, or possibly have a fascination for speed and water sports. Whatever your passion, there is a boat out there that is made specifically for your needs and desires. However it isn’t always easy to know exactly which boat you should choose. It is easy to be overwhelmed by the enormous variety of boat types and models. There are several different boat choices based on what they would be used for.
What will I use the boat for?
You should first decide what you anticipate using the boat for. There are boats for fishing, water sports, cruising, sailing, entertaining, or taking long trips. Some are designed for multiple purposes.
Once you know what you want to do with it, decide who you are going to be taking with you? You may not want a pontoon boat the fits 12 people if you are only going to be fishing with a buddy. You also don’t want to overload your boat because of safety.
Consider where you will be enjoying your boat; up and down the calm river, on a sheltered lake, or an open ocean with high waves and rough seas. If you will be taking trips you will want your boat to have a cabin.
Choosing the right engine for my boat:
Now consider the propulsion needed when deciding on an engine type. The horsepower and weight are very important factors in the performance of your boat. An engine that is not powerful enough will cause your boat to work harder than it should and lead to a great deal of maintenance and excess use of fuel. You need to consider the size and weight of your boat, including gear and passengers. There are six different propulsion types with varying factors to consider when choosing a system for your boat.
Outboard Motors (2 types)
Outboard motors are detachable and mounted on the stern of the boat, with horsepower ranging from 1HP to over 300HP. These engines can be used in all types of water. The 2 types of outboard motors are 2 stroke and 4 stroke.
2 Stroke: better acceleration, no need to change oil, better fuel efficiency, lower priced, weighs less, quieter
4 Stroke: lower emissions, excellent fuel economy, electronic ignition systems, good acceleration, oil added to engine not fuel
Diesel Inboard Engines
These engines range in size and horsepower, and rely on compression for power. They are designed for boats over 35ft because they produce torque and weigh more than gas engines.
No carbon monoxide in cabins or back, non-explosive fuel, low running cost, excellent torque, long life expectancy
Gas Inboard Engines
These engines are used for a variety of different sizes and types of boats, and range in horsepower from 90HP to 1000HP. It is located in the middle of the boat with the drive running through the bottom of the boat to the propeller. The rudder is separate for steering.
Simple drive system, quite, hidden, lower maintenance, low running costs
Jet Propulsion
These systems do not include a propeller, which make it safer for water sports. They are inboard engines that take in water which flows through a pump that is powered by an impeller. The high pressure caused by this, propels the boat forward. However, steering is only possible when power is being applied. Things can also be sucked into the water intake, and shouldn’t be used in shallow water.
Stern Drive
This is often called an Inboard/Outboard and consists of an engine and drive connected through the transom of the boat. The engine is inside and the propulsion is outside of the boat. This drive can be trimmed up or down. There are many different types of functions depending on what they will be used for. They can be used with one or two propellers, as well as two drives on one boat with one or two propellers.
Low maintenance, ease of control and steering, used on gas or diesel engines, quiet
Choose the right boat for your favorite activity:
There are different types of boats for a variety of activities and intended use. Below are examples of what boats are used for with lists of boat types best suited for that activity. You will find that there are several boats that are intended for more that one activity. For example, if you like fishing, water skiing, and plan to sleep on board; you can choose between a Stern Drive Cruiser and Cuddy Cabin.

How to Tame the Annoying Caps Lock Key in Windows
Do you sometimes find yourself suddenly typing in all upper case because you accidentally hit the Caps Lock key? Do you ever wonder if that key couldn’t be used for something else? If you are one of the many people who are as annoyed by Caps Lock as I am, this tip is for you. I know there are a lot of you because I recently did a Google search for the phrase “hate Caps Lock” and got 142,000 hits.
In Windows XP, Vista, and 7, the keyboard functions can be changed in the Registry. In this tip, I’ll provide the REG files that will do the job on Caps Lock. The registry key that is involved is
The value that has to be edited is “Scancode Map” but it is a somewhat complicated binary entry and using a REG file is the best procedure. I’ll offer scripts for two ways to go—-disable Caps Lock entirely or change it to a Shift key.
Disable Caps Lock
If you apply this fix, the Caps Lock key will no longer do anything. Download the zipped file from the link Disable “Caps Lock” that is at this site. The file is listed in the section REG files for editing the Windows Registry. Then do the following:
Change Caps Lock to Shift
Go to the same page mentioned above but download from the entry called Change Caps Lock key to Shift . The procedure is the same as above except that the file in step 3 is called CapsToShift.reg
How to change everything back
If you don’t like the results of changing the Caps Lock function, download the file from the link Restore Caps Lock on the same page as before and follow the same procedure as above.
Remapping other keys
In the next tip, I mention some software for remapping the keyboard in a more general way. In the meantime, enjoy typing without worrying about the Caps Lock key.

- Back up your Registry or create a System Restore point
- Unzip the downloaded file
- Right-click the unzipped file , which is called “disable-capslock.reg”
- In the right-click menu, select “Merge”. Windows Vista/7 will give UAC warnings
- Answer the UAC challenge if you are using Windows Vista or 7
- The file will be merged into the Registry. However, there will be no message to tell you that it has happened
- You have to log off and back on before you see the change

Tips and Tricks for Silverlight Developers.
wanted to create a series of blog post that gets right to the point and is aimed specifically at Silverlight Developers. The most important things I want this series to answer is :
Tip/Trick #16)
What is it? Find out version information about Silverlight and which WebKit it is using by going to http://issilverlightinstalled.com/scriptverify/.
Why do I care? I’ve had those users that its just easier to give them a site and say copy/paste the line that says User Agent in order to troubleshoot a Silverlight problem. I’ve also been debugging my own Silverlight applications and needed an easy way to determine if the plugin is disabled or not.
How do I do it: Simply navigate to http://issilverlightinstalled.com/scriptverify/ and hit the Verify button. An example screenshot is located below:
Results from Chrome 7
Results from Internet Explorer 8 (With Silverlight Disabled)
Tip/Trick #17)
What is it? Use Lambdas whenever you can.
Why do I care? It is my personal opinion that code is easier to read using Lambdas after you get past the syntax.
How do I do it: For example: You may write code like the following:
To me this style forces me to look for the other Method to see what the code is actually doing. The style located below is much easier to read in my opinion and does the exact same thing.
Tip/Trick #18)
What is it? Prevent development Web Service references from breaking when Visual Studio auto generates a new port number.
Why do I care? We have all been there, we are developing a Silverlight Application and all of a sudden our development web services break. We check and find out that the local port number that Visual Studio assigned has changed and now we need up to update all of our service references. We need a way to stop this.
How do I do it: This can actually be prevented with just a few mouse click. Right click on your web solution and goto properties. Click the tab that says, Web. You just need to click the radio button and specify a port number. Now you won’t be bothered with that anymore.
Tip/Trick #19)
What is it? You can disable the Close Button a ChildWindow.
Why do I care? I wouldn’t blog about it if I hadn’t seen it. Devs trying to override keystrokes to prevent users from closing a Child Window.
How do I do it: A property exist on the ChildWindow called “HasCloseButton”, you simply change that to false and your close button is gone. You can delete the “Cancel” button and add some logic to the OK button if you want the user to respond before proceeding.
Tip/Trick #20)
What is it? Cleanup your XAML.
Why do I care? By removing unneeded namespaces, not naming all of your controls and getting rid of designer markup you can improve code quality and readability.
How do I do it: (This is a 3 in one tip)
Remove unused Designer markup:
1)
Have you ever wondered what the following code snippet does?
This code is telling the designer to do something special with this page in “Design mode” Specifically the width and the height of the page. When its running in the browser it will not use this information and it is actually ignored by the XAML parser. In other words, if you don’t need it then delete it.
2)
If you are not using a namespace then remove it. In the code sample below, I am using Resharper which will tell me the ones that I’m not using by the grayed out line below. If you don’t have resharper you can look in your XAML and manually remove the unneeded namespaces.
3)
Don’t name an control unless you actually need to refer to it in procedural code. If you name a control you will take a slight performance hit that is totally unnecessary if its not being called.
- What is it?
- Why do I care?
- How do I do it?

Firefox quick search trick
This is a great time-saving trick that works in Firefox but not in Internet Explorer. Do you find that there is a particular website that you visit regularly and search for something within that site? Maybe you go to imdb.com and search for an actor or movie name, or you visit Facebook and search for a friend’s name. Today I will show you how to really speed up that procedure.
For this example, I will use my website. If you look in the top right area, you will see that there is a search box:
If you ever want to find an old blog post, just type a related word in that search box and hit “Go”, and you will see a list of my past blogs that include that word. It’s pretty handy.
If you use Firefox, you can do that search in fewer steps, and without even having to go to my website first. Here’s how:
1. Go to my site and in that search box, do a right-click. In the menu that pops up, choose “Add a keyword for this search”.
2. That brings up this window:
3. In the “Keyword” field, type the word “tip” and click Save.
That’s all you need to do to set this up. With this done, here is how you do a quick search for one of my past tips. Let’s say you want to find my past tips about Gmail. With Firefox open (at any website, it doesn’t have to be mine), hit the F6 button and then type: tip gmail and hit Enter
(With that procedure I threw in another shortcut – the F6 key. When you hit F6, it highlights the address bar in your web browser. That’s a bonus tip at no extra charge :)
So did you see what happened there? No matter what website you are viewing at the moment, F6 highlights the address bar, then “tip gmail” tells Firefox to search my site for posts that contain the word “Gmail”.
You can do this with any website that has the Search function.

Twin Tip Ski Tricks
Overview
The twin tip is a specialized model of the downhill ski. Freestyle riders prefer the twin tip design as it allows them to ride backwards. Unlike conventional models of alpine skis, the twin tip construction features an elevated tip on the front and back end. You can increase your bag of tricks with twin tip skiing maneuvers.
Spinning
Spinning remains one of the most basic twin tip techniques. Many skiers prefer to practice the spinning technique on inclined snow ramps. The twin tip enables you to land backwards after a 180- or 540-degree spin. Crouch down as you reach the top lip of the freestyle skiing ramp. Spin your shoulders while pointing the front tips of your skis in the direction of the rotation. When landing backwards, look over your shoulder to have a clear view of your skiing direction.
Tail Grab
The tail grab is a stylish twin tip skiing trick. Crouch down to lower your skiing stance as you begin to ride up the takeoff ramp. Extend your legs and jump vertically as you reach the top lip of the skiing ramp. Point the front tips of your skis towards the ground while extending your dominant hand behind you. The ABC-of-Skiing website recommends crossing your skis as you soar above the mountain slope. Use your right hand to grab the tail, or back tip, of your right ski.
Rail Slide
Many twin tip skiers enjoy riding in terrain parks. Freestyle terrain parks commonly feature circular and square shaped rails. Use your twin tip skis to slide across rails and ledges. Ski up to the rail with a moderate amount of speed. Extend your legs to jump above the freestyle rail. "Free Skier Magazine" recommends turning your skis until they remain perpendicular with the rail. Bend your knees as the twin tip skis slide across the top of the rail. Dismount in a forward or backwards skiing stance.
Back Flip
The lightweight construction of the twin tip skis allow you to perform a difficult trick known as the back flip. The back flip may seem intimidating at first as you will have to rotate upside down. Use a medium to large sized skiing ramp to learn the back flip. Approach the ramp with a comfortable amount of speed. Lean back while jumping off the top lip of the ramp. Tuck your knees to begin the backwards somersault. Watch the ground to spot your landing.

Tips and Tricks Friday
Today's tip is for antiquing. Reading some forums this morning, and one question was on paint for antiquing. What do you use? Acrylics? Wood stain? Old English Furniture Polish? (just kidding...although, if you wanted the doll to smell like Mom just cleaned house...)
I have discovered a favorite, that's not too messy, seems to last forever, dries matte, and is inexpensive: Water soluble oil paint. I bought it at Hobby Lobby--I'm sure you can get it, in several brands. The one I got was Windsor Newton, in burnt umber.
To use it, I put the TINIEST amount down, depending of course on how much area you need to cover, and mix it with water! That easy. It takes some serious stirring to get the lumps dissolved, but it doesn't dry as fast as acrylics, which always had the tenancy--for me at least--to over-color the project. If you want more, another coat does the trick, or a less diluted mix.
The next thing I plan to try is water-soluble oil pastels for coloring/painting faces & features. Does anyone have experience using them?
